- Occupational name for a potter, one who makes earthen vessels.
- Potter is a name J.K. Rowling has always been fond of since childhood. "Potter's field" is often the name given to a cemetery where a city or town buries those who have gone unclaimed or unwanted (a community's orphans). A potter's field is also considered a cursed land because Judas hanged himself in one.
- Lily Potter is Petunia Dursley's sister, but they hadn't met in several years; Mrs. Dursley pretended she didn't have a sister. Her and her good-for-nothing husband were as unDursleyish as it was possible to be.
- The Dursleys knew that the Potters has a small son, but had never seen him.
