Harry Potter and Me

I've been a fan of Harry Potter since I first got written up for taking too long a break...I was working the movie theater.

November 16, 2001, 10am, or so, I showed up to work at the theater to find a huge line waiting to get in. School kids on class field trips! And parents who took their kids out of school for the day. I had no idea what was going on. But I soon found out, and I vowed to avoid it. That day, I had to rip tickets at the door for everyone coming in for movies. When it was finally time to open the doors and let people in, I announced to the hundreds of people going up the stairs (the theater was underground) that "No hot chocolate or coffee would be allowed," and that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone would be playing on Screen 3, "middle of the hall on the right." I caught quite a few people trying to sneak hot beverages in their purses and pockets.

The next several weeks, the show kept selling out. No other show was nearly as popular. And so I wasn't going to see it.

Then, one day, I decided to give in, and use one of my ten-minute breaks to sit in on Harry Potter; usually spend that time in a random movie. It was the scene of Neville trying to fly on the broom. The CGI was so bad, I knew I was right in avoiding it. And so another few weeks went by, and the popularity hadn't really subsided. And so I gave it another chance, and it was the chess match at the end...

I was so impressed with the chess match, that I forgot that I only had ten minutes, and I sat there glued, getting the big reveal of Quirrel. And then a manager walked in and grabbed me (much more polite than that sounds, sorta). I got taken up to the office, and got written up for taking too long a break. Manager said she understood, but still had to. That night, after clocking out from that night's shift on door, I went and got a ticket to the movie, I walked in to as McGonagall transformed from the cat into Maggie Smith... And that was it, forever hooked. The next day I had off of work, and so watched it twice more. Three times in theater within 24 hours. And then I watched it again several more times before it left our theater (and I lost that job...).

I attended several midnight premieres, and finished reading Book 7 while waiting outside the drive-in theater to watch Deathly Hallows Part 2 midnight premiere.

I've read them several times, and I could not count the number of times I've listened to the audiobooks by Stephen Fry, as I listen to the all 199 chapters on shuffle... A few years ago, I even started doing my own reading and commentated reading for YouTube, and about to start a podcast colab. This website is meant to help with notes for that podcast, primarily, or at least is why I've started it. But ultimately, it just comes down to

I'm a fan of Harry Potter and Hogwarts.

This website will contain information from the 7 Books, and supporting information from external research. I'll be adding stuff to this site as I work through this new re-read through, so if I haven't included someone or something, I'll likely get to it soon. I started this website the 24th of October 2024.
